The brush reveals what was always there.
In 2019, 847 ink drawings were discovered in a hidden room in Kyoto. The creatures they depict had never existed—until now.
“The brush does not create. It reveals.”

The Ink World Today
Kyoto, 2019
During the renovation of an old machiya townhouse in Higashiyama, workers discovered a sealed room behind a false wall.
Inside: 847 sheets of handmade washi paper, each containing ink drawings of creatures that had never existed. The papers belonged to Endo Masashi (遠藤正志, 1847-1912), a calligrapher erased from history.
His final journal entry reads: “They are not drawings. They are doors.”
The Five Elements
Endo classified his creatures into five schools, each tied to an elemental force.
